It is shown as grand. Even the featured artist from Slipnot is shown to give the production gravitas it doesn’t have. Each funny line has a pause for a laugh but no laughs are in this. It’s incredibly self-indulgent. The writing is brilliant and delivers emotion and very intense suspenseful scenes that will have you on the edge of your seat especially in the final act. I get not liking The Wall- I don’t even like the movie that much but it’s the disrespect for it and the lack of self-awareness to how awful your parody is that will have people tear you apart. Person reading this- if you are going to do a parody, there are a few things to keep in mind. Do it in good fun, be self-aware of who you are and make sure it looks good before you start making fun of someone else. This is just a really cute story. It’s a wistful and melancholy look at graduation and the lasts of things. Being someone now who is in his inner 20’s, the whole having to let things go and see less and less of old friends becomes sadly more and more relevant. This book really does capture that kind sadness. Yet, there’s kinda a happy sadness to the book as well. This book is hilarious and has so many sharp and clever lines Rowell is known to deliver. It’s also a story about the celebration of friendship and comradely. It’s a Butterfly Christmas tree t-shirt about appreciating the simple things in life like being able to make the best succotash and be proud of that. I love how this story showed that you should be happy where you are at, even if where you are at doesn’t seem all glamorous. Maybe it’s cheesy and manufactured but dang it, it’s charming and authentic. I just absolutely love that. I hold a strong connection to things in life most people wouldn’t because it brings me back to a simpler time.
