The screenplay here is kinda abysmal. The way relationships are forced here is stunning. The relationships here with the band, Freddie’s love interest and his family are so incredibly rushed and forced its kinda laughable. Literally they expect you to care for these relationships when they first establish it, which is a big no no in the world of screenplay writing. All of this is shoved aside to give us a water downed version of Freddie Mercurys life which is risque enough to not be appropriate for kids but not enough to be more interesting and complex then it already. I feel like is Sasha Baron Coens version of this could have been a reality, we would have gotten even more devastated when we figured out Freddie got Aids, which here is just kinda a thing they throw in the end to make you gasp and care all of a sudden. In that version maybe we would have seen Freddie as a more complex figure. In one of my favorite shows, Bojack Horseman we follow a character who is simply not a great person yet we see sides of him that make us want to see him be better and be good. We never get that with Freddie. When people start to leave him and nothing goes right, it’s like, “well, yeah that serves him right for the way he’s treated everyone,” and his emotional beat where he learns is wrong is so rushed. If what you want from this movie is to hear some amazing Queen songs in an easy story that is by the numbers, this is for you. I understand why people like this, it is very entertaining and it’s always inspiring to see true stories portrayed on the big screen. I just think this film could have used it’s time better to tell a more effective story about a legend like Freddie Mercury is all. He promised your country he’d do what he said he’d do a so far, he’s gone beyond that. What’s the matter with people today? They should be very thankful that he’s not wasting your money nor time.
