DescriptionThe Saudi family held the emirate in the town of Diriyah in Nejd. In the mid-18th century the emir (amir), Muhammad ibn Saud, allied with the mullah Muhammad ibn ‘Abd Al-Wahhab, and proceeded to conquer most of Arabia except Oman and Yemen. The Ottomans took most of it away from him. After World War I the Sauds fought with the Hashemites, eventually the Sauds kicked the Hashemites out of Arabia. One of them became King of Iraq, another founded the line that came to rule Jordan. Saudi Arabia today is an absolute monarchy.
